Wet and wild victory for Glover at the 109th U.S. Open
Mother Nature dictated the conditions at this years’ U.S. Open, but Lucas Glover got to write the story…
The 29 year old with the southern drawl grabbed his first major title in the monumental 5 day soaker that was the 2009 U.S. Open at Bethpage in Farmingdale, N.Y. He took home the silver trophy and $1.35 million for the victory, winning by two strokes over Phil Mickelson, David Duval and Ricky Barnes. He was the most consistent in play and ultimately the last man standing.
The intense weather led to an intense and bizarre scene, with rain delays utterly soaking the course, stalling play and tee times in addition to halting Thursday’s events and forcing an unusual Monday finish. And Phil Mickelson made history as well, not for the final victory but for the most second-place U.S. Open finishes on record, bypassing Bobby Jones, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus.

All seven golf courses on the North Olympic Peninsula held organizational meetings to structure the first ever Peninsula Championship for May 12 with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
Ray DeJong is the chairman for this first-time event, and he reports progress was made.
Cedars at Dungeness Golf Course head PGA professional Bill Shea has agreed to host the event – and the very large silver cup will be the traveling golf trophy awarded to the winner.
This year’s winner will keep the trophy for one year on display at their golf course, and each annual winner that follows will do the same.
Twelve players will be selected to represent each team, and no professional players will be allowed as team members.
Prizes are yet to be determined along with individual awards and special awards to all team members of a winning team.

Strange ending at Pebble

Strange ending at Pebble

It was a weird scene Monday at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. Instead of celebrating his victory on the golf course, Dustin Johnson posed with the winner’s trophy in a cramped interview room, then headed outdoors through the slop for more pictures with the trophy on a drenched and deserted 18th green.
But it didn’t feel weird to Johnson.
“It feels great,” said Johnson, who was awarded the title when the tournament was called Monday after 54 holes because of bad weather. “Any time you can take pictures with the trophy, it’s good. It doesn’t matter if it’s pouring down rain.”
The final round, which had been postponed Sunday, was canceled early Monday. With standing water on the fairways and greens, and no relief in the forecast, play was called at 7:30 a.m. before anybody teed off.
It was the first abbreviated finish at the AT&T since 1999, when Payne Stewart won in 54 holes. In 2000, one round was delayed by rain, but play was completed Monday.
Ollie Nutt, head of the tournament, said he was glad the 2009 event concluded as an official tournament, even if it was cut short.
“Unfortunately, it was the right decision,” he said. “Fortunately, we got in 54 holes.” Read more »
Harrington sorry that he can’t compete for Vardon

Golf trophy
Trophy news from St. Louis, MO
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Padraig Harrington was about the only one not complaining that a double major champion could not qualify for the Tour Championship, blaming only himself for missing consecutive cuts at the start of the PGA Tour Playoffs.
His biggest letdown? Realizing he couldn’t win the Vardon Trophy.
Harrington figured he was safe playing the minimum 15 events on the PGA Tour. But he missed the cut three times, and finished the year with only 52 rounds. Players must complete 60 rounds to be eligible for the Vardon Trophy for lowest adjusted scoring average.
Trophy is Long Overdue for Bognor Golfers
Trophy News From England
Not since the 1990s have the club won the trophy, contested between Bognor, Cowdray Park, Ham Manor, Littlehamp-ton and Worthing.
Teams of ten from each club play foursomes matchplay, home and away, on Wednesday evenings through the summer.
So Bognor were crowned champions by one point, and at the end-of-season presentation supper at Cowdray Park, Bognor again stunned the 60-strong assembled golfers by achieving a notable double as they won the Supper Trophy, edging out Cowdray on countback.<!–more–>
Bognor club captain Ian Pettie was delighted to get his hands on the Evening League trophy after such a long time.
And team captain Simon Watts paid tribute to his ‘loyal, long-suffering’ team who patiently and good-humouredly endured numerous wooden spoons and lowly finishes before finally achieving top spot.
Those who contributed to the epic win were John Adams, John Carlton, Paul Elliott, Robbie Hughes, John Lampard, John Meek, Clive Millett, Ian Paine, Brian Poston, Jason Rae, Rob Redmond, Trevor Rich, Ron Stevens, Mark Watson, Simon Watts and Mark Willmer.

Harrington Soars to Lead in PGA Player of Year, Vardon Trophy Races

Golf Trophy
Trophy News from Palm Beach Gardens, Florida
Padraig Harrington of Ireland, who wrote a remarkable chapter in major championship history over the past few weeks with victories in the British Open and PGA Championship, has taken a commanding lead in The PGA of America’s 2008 Player of the Year point standings.
Harrington also leads the Vardon Trophy race, and with 44 completed rounds, needs to record 16 additional complete rounds to meet the required minimum of 60 rounds for one of the most prestigious season-ending awards.
Should Harrington continue his momentum toward both awards, he would be the first European since Nick Faldo in 1990 to win the PGA Player of the Year award and would be the first-ever European to capture the Vardon Trophy, presented annually by The PGA of America since 1937 (not awarded from 1942-’46 due to WWII).
The PGA of America has honored the game’s best players with The PGA Player of the Year Award since 1948. The Award is currently presented to the top touring professional based on a point system for tournament wins, official money standings and scoring averages.
Since 1937, the Vardon Trophy, named by The PGA of America in honor of famed British golfer Harry Vardon, is awarded annually to the touring professional with the lowest adjusted scoring average.
