Trophy news from St. Louis, MO

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Padraig Harrington was about the only one not complaining that a double major champion could not qualify for the Tour Championship, blaming only himself for missing consecutive cuts at the start of the PGA Tour Playoffs.

His biggest letdown? Realizing he couldn’t win the Vardon Trophy.

Harrington figured he was safe playing the minimum 15 events on the PGA Tour. But he missed the cut three times, and finished the year with only 52 rounds. Players must complete 60 rounds to be eligible for the Vardon Trophy for lowest adjusted scoring average.

Richard S. Johnson Gets First PGA Tour Victory Trophy

Trophy News From Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Richard S. Johnson knows there was one shot that gave him the confidence to win his first tournament trophy on the PGA Tour.

“It all started out with that first day. I made that hole in one and all of a sudden I felt like I could make some birdies,” Johnson said.

Johnson birdied three of his last four holes Sunday to shoot six-under-par 64 and win the U.S. Bank Championship by a stroke over Ken Duke. He finished at 16-under 264 on the 6,759-yard Brown Deer Park Golf Course to win the $720,000 first prize.

Johnson, the sixth golfer from Sweden to win a trophy on tour and seventh first-time winner this season, had to go through qualifying school last fall to get his tour card back and he had made the cut in only three of 10 events this season before this one.

Kenny Perry closed strongly with a 64 to get to 12-under and finish tied for sixth. He had been criticized for skipping the British Open after winning golf trophies in three of his last five tournaments, including last week’s John Deere Classic trophy.

Golf Classic Awards Trophies

Trophy news from Pierce County, WS

Due to the continuing success of the Wisconsin 4-H Foundation’s Southern Golf Classic held annually in Dousman, this year brought about a new northern golf trophy event for 4-H.

On June 23, the foundation held its first annual Northern Golf Classic at Kilkarney Hills Golf Club in River Falls, as a fundraiser for Wisconsin 4-H programs. The northern event, sponsored by the Wisconsin Bureau Farm Federation, raised over $10,000 for the foundation. These funds will benefit programs for the nearly 100,000 Wisconsin youth involved in 4-H activities. 4-H helps to instill leadership, citizenship and communication skills by involving youth in a variety of projects and activities.

The day began with a grilled lunch and a shotgun start for the 94 golfers who participated. Along with a silent auction, there were many events taking place on the course throughout the day, including trophies for the longest drive, longest putt and even a chance to win a car for a hole-in-one.

The trophy winning golf team included Kevin Ritscher, Chuck Rowe, Adam Schruth and Mitch Schruth. And close behind them in second place was the team including Dugan Davidson, Carl Dibucci, Cole Funk and Brady Meyer. The event was co-chaired by Jim Harsdorf and Dean Henderson, with committee members Sue Fisher, Frank Ginther, Marie Ritscher and Robert Hanson, all working hard to make the event a big success

Prestigious Golf Trophy Found

Trophies News from Liverpool, England

A chance discovery on the other side of the world has sparked a search which has led to Merseyside.

Alan Stewart unearthed two silver dish trophies at a garage sale in his home town of Alberta in Calgary, Canada.

The six-inch diameter trophies, which belonged to the late stepfather of a neighbor, were engraved with the inscription ‘HG Beazley Cup 1939’ with the Royal Liverpool Golf Club medallion in the center.

As a result of Alan’s enquires on this side of the Atlantic, he has been told that the golf trophies were presented for a club event held at Hoylake during their St Andrews Meeting, but has been unable to find out the name of the winner in 1939. Says Alan: “A golf memorabilia expert at Bonham’s Auction house has suggested a value of around £150, but I am more interested in the nature of the competition for which they were awarded and who the 1939 winner turned out to be.”
