Golf sculptor draws on a patriotic icon for this golf trophy
Golf sculptor Malcolm DeMille (cousin to the iconic Hollywood director Cecil B. DeMille) creates magnificent golf trophies, many of which are a familiar sight at the 18th hole of major PGA and LPGA tours. His stunning golf trophy for the AT&T National Hosted by Tiger Woods draws on Americana architecture.
The winner’s trophy is an incredibly intricate, scale version of our US Capitol building. Presented to the tournament’s champion each year (by Tiger Woods the host; sometimes to himself!) the AT&T National trophy stands symbolic in its design and timing… it is awarded during the 4th of July weekend in the Washington, D.C. area.

Golf: from the green to the page to the screen
Some time next year a movie will be released that my not fit into the ’sports genre’ category. “Golf in the Kingdom” has taken years to realize, having sat with Academy Award winner Clint Eastwood for a decade (who held the option on the film) but not coming to fruition in his very capable hands. Fifteen scripts later and still nothing. Now jump scene to spring 2009…
Producer Mindy Affrime and director Susan Streitfeld just wrapped up the shoot in Oregon at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort. They call their adaptaion of the 1972 novel (of the same name) by Michael Murphy a low-budget film; closer to an art film than a sports film. Low-budget or not, the cast is made up of talented actors including Malcolm McDowell, Frances Fischer, Mason Gamble and David O’Hara. Are there awards in their future for best actor, or awards for the movie’s editing or costumes? Time will tell, and what’s of greater importance to the author is that “Golf in the Kingdom” has finally been realized on film after 37 years of waiting paitently in the green…

Wet and wild victory for Glover at the 109th U.S. Open
Mother Nature dictated the conditions at this years’ U.S. Open, but Lucas Glover got to write the story…
The 29 year old with the southern drawl grabbed his first major title in the monumental 5 day soaker that was the 2009 U.S. Open at Bethpage in Farmingdale, N.Y. He took home the silver trophy and $1.35 million for the victory, winning by two strokes over Phil Mickelson, David Duval and Ricky Barnes. He was the most consistent in play and ultimately the last man standing.
The intense weather led to an intense and bizarre scene, with rain delays utterly soaking the course, stalling play and tee times in addition to halting Thursday’s events and forcing an unusual Monday finish. And Phil Mickelson made history as well, not for the final victory but for the most second-place U.S. Open finishes on record, bypassing Bobby Jones, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus.
